Day 03: Pampajaponesa - Sisaypampa.

The third day is going to be the most difficult day of the walk. It's long, it's cold, and you have to walk over the 4,650 meters to the Abra del Salkantay. However, the dawn in the midst of the extensive pastures of Sisaypampa, the sun illuminating, the Andean peaks at 6,264 meters rising behind will make an energizing and fascinating start to the day.

The climb to the Abra takes about 3 or 4 hours, and is quite pronounced with narrow curves and steep slopes until light structures finally emerge from the Abra rock. Unless the road in June or July, the road should not have any snow or ice, although hail, sleet, ice, and rain are possible at any time of the year.

Although the air is thin and the road is steep, anyone who is physically well, fit and acclimatized to the altitude can reach the mountain pass. Our group carries additional oxygen if necessary, but you can also ride a horse through the mountain pass.

Once we have crossed the pass, it is the beginning of a downhill hike where it is very likely that we will descend more than 1,700 meters vertically until we reach our camp on the Canal del Inca. During our walk, we will be able to appreciate and enjoy the impressive Andean landscape.

Night camp in Sisaypampa.

On this day you should feel proud to get to the top! After a break here, we begin the descent towards the lunch stop located in Pacaymayu (3,550 meters). On the way to the pass we will be able to see lots of hummingbirds and other birds.
